The label Italian-American service organization Unico National is pinning on Mafia II, and the group is demanding Take-Two halt plans to release the game. In a statement, Unico president Andre DiMino accuses Take-Two of discrimination because Mafia II depicts Italian-Americans as violent criminals associated with organized crime.

Mafia II is a third-person action-adventure video game which is the sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. It is being developed by 2K Czech, previously known as Illusion Softworks, and will be published by 2K Games. Mafia II was announced in August 2008 at the Leipzig Games Convention, and is due for release on PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360  this month of August 2010. Mafia II will be released on August 24 in North America, August 26 in Australia and August 27 internationally

Take-Two got word of the hubbub, and Chairman Strauss Zelnick responded with a statement of his own:

"Mafia II tells a compelling story about organized crime in America -- a subject that for decades has been featured in movies, television shows and novels," Zelnick wrote. "Neither Unico nor any other organization purporting to represent Italian-Americans has seen or played Mafia II. At Take-Two, we balance our right to free expression with what we believe is a thoughtful and responsible approach to creating and marketing our products. Mafia II is M-rated in accordance with our industry's strict standards. It is specifically not targeted toward young people."

Unico, Italian for "unique," was founded in 1922 as a service and charitable organization for Italian-Americans. The group is also speaking out against MTV reality show "Jersey Shore."

Mafia II is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs and is set for release on August 24.

Like the original Mafia title, Mafia II immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late-1940s/early-1950s scenario. Players will easily become engaged in the game’s cinematic Hollywood movie experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing city. By fusing high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative, Mafia II looks to be the industry’s most compelling Mafia title to date.
